What the table counts

UCDP define an event as: An incident where armed force was used by an organized actor against another organized actor, or against civilians, resulting in at least 1 direct death at a specific location and a specific date

  • A count holds the events that UCDP finds in its sources. It does not measure danger, the size of a conflict or the conduct of a government.
  • A count depends on the sources that UCDP can reach. It also depends on the limit of 25 deaths in a year that UCDP uses for a conflict.
  • The table has the countries with 20 or more events in the earlier period and a change of 20 percent or more. It shows the two counts and the two periods.
  • The figures from January 2026 are from Candidate Events. Candidate Events are preliminary and UCDP revises them. A figure carries the mark P only when it counts at least one event from Candidate Events.

UCDP attempts to distinguish and not include unreasonable claims in the high estimate of fatalities, and tends to be highly conservative when counting fatalities

The table

A country is in the table when it has a page: 10 or more events in the last 12 months.
