Civilian deaths as a share of estimated deaths

Data through Source: UCDP

In the 12 months to 30 Sep 2026, the estimated deaths in countries with a page are 240,922P. UCDP counts 88,850P of them as deaths of civilians, which is 37 percent. 35 countries have 100 estimated deaths or more. In 6 of them, deaths of civilians are more than half of the estimated deaths. The share is highest in Tanzania (100 percentP) and lowest in Ukraine (4 percentP).

P Preliminary. The figure is from UCDP Candidate Events, and UCDP revises these events.

Not all events in UCDP Candidate will make it into the final UCDP GED and new events will be added. The UCDP Candidate is a dataset containing events that have a high probability of being included in the final annual version of UCDP GED.

How the figures are made

A country is in the table when it has 100 estimated deaths or more in the period. A small base would make a share swing.

The share depends on the way UCDP codes who is a civilian. The deaths are the best estimate of UCDP. The share is not a measure of danger or of blame.

Civilians in UCDP data are unarmed people who are not active members of the security forces of the state, or members of an organized armed militia or opposition group.

Note that the UCDP definition of civilian does not refer to the definition of civilian under international law.
